Today I sat down with Cal for a great conversation about his week in the construction world. We went through some of the tools and equipment he’s been working with and unboxing, including a Milwaukee table saw, Milwaukee chop saw, air compressor, radio/charger, and a Makita 23-gauge air nail gun.
But this conversation was about a lot more than tools.
We talked about his time on the job site, the progress he’s been seeing, what he’s learning, and some of the educational experiences that come with being around construction every day.
We also talked about Cal’s grandma & grandpa — a calm, polite, hardworking people person — and how those qualities can make such a big impact on a young person. We talked about his mom and dad and what wonderful parents they are, giving Cal the guidance and support to grow into the person he is becoming.
We also talked about Mike Rowe and his work promoting the skilled trades, including scholarships and opportunities for people who want to build a career with their hands and their skills.
The trades have been shrinking over the years, and we need more young people — men and women — getting involved in construction, concrete, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, equipment operation, and all the other skilled trades that keep this country moving.
Young people like Cal are the future.
Parenting, mentorship, education, responsibility, hard work, and giving young people room to learn all play a part in helping the next generation grow.
That’s a big part of why I’m doing this channel. I want to help people all day long — young and old — learn, grow, work hard, and educate themselves about construction, building, life, and becoming better at what they do.
