Introduction
Sports Medicine, also known as sport and exercise medicine, is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Sport medicine is a field of medicine that uses a holistic, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary approach to health care for those patients engaged in a sporting or recreational activity. Another great definition of SM comes from American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine; sport medicine is that branch of the healing arts profession that utilizes a holistic, comprehensive team approach to the prevention, diagnosis, and adequate management of sports and exercise-related injuries, disorders, dysfunctions and exercise-related disease processes.
Now let’s go to, Nature of Work
Sports medicine physicians are also commonly known as sport physicians or sports medicine doctors. The main job of a sports medicine physician is to heal and prevent injuries of athletes. Most injuries usually deal with different joints, bones or muscles of the body. Sports physicians may work with other people such as nurses, physical therapists or nutritionists when an athlete is injured. Sports physician’s counsel athletes, helping them maximize performance, prevent injuries and lead a healthy lifestyle. They may suggest supplements, diet plans or exercise regimens to address performance issues. They may also help athletes with psychological or substance abuse issues related to sports.
Now let’s go to, Eligibility and Professional Courses

• Candidate must pass the 10+2 examination.
• An undergraduate course for three years requires a candidate to have passed the XIIth standard with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology preferably with 55% of marks.
• Sports Medicine is a highly specialized branch of medical science, which can only be studied after the completion of your MBBS degree. For getting admission into a diploma course, you need to appear for the All India Sports Medicine Post Graduate entrance test, followed by an interview.
• To procure their license to practice, physicians sit for United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Exam (COMLEX), the one for osteopathic practice.
