During my recent trip home to Kenya, I was blessed with the opportunity to speak to 6th form students at my alma mater and provide some insight on the Journey to becoming a Physician in the US.
I want to highlight some key points as this talk was specific to its audience:
- I attended Brookhouse International School and did my A levels, after which I attended St. George’s University School of Medicine in the Caribbean. SGU has a track specifically designed for students with Advanced level or International Baccalaureate credentials who desire to be physicians.
- Instead of having to go to undergrad and do 4 years of premed, SGU builds upon your existing advanced academic background from high school. For me, this meant instead of doing 4 years of undergrad, I had to do 1 accelerated year of premed.
- The students I am speaking to in this video are on a similar track (should they choose to attend a Caribbean medical school with the hopes of one day practicing in the US).
Although the advice given in this video may be at times specific to International students who are seeking to obtain residency positions in the US, after obtaining an MD from an International Medical School, there are still a lot of useful points that are applicable to anyone thinking of pursuing a career in healthcare.
Thanks for watching ❤️
