The story is about the author's experience with the banking system. He recalls his ordeal at the bank when he tries to go and deposit money at the bank.
He finds everything about banks frightening and is uncertain about what to do. He meets the manager who seeing his unusual behavior thinks that he's from a detective agency or from a very rich family. When the manager realizes that he only intends to deposit $56, he is annoyed and dismisses him.
The manager asks the accountant to take care of the deposit and he is finally able to deposit his money. He intends to withdraw $6 from what he has deposited but mistakenly writes $56 in the cheque. When he realizes his mistake and notices that everyone in the bank is looking at him, he pretends to be angry. He ends up withdrawing all the money he deposited and promises to himself never to go to a bank again, especially when he hears the people in the bank laughing at him when he steps out.
