The Water Systems program prepares learners with laboratory and technical knowledge for entry-level water services positions. Students apply the engineering process to comprehend and resolve challenging problems relating to the water cycle, water and wastewater treatment. Also embedded throughout the program are applied mathematics, chemistry and microbiology concepts.
Instructors, who are industry-certified, will guide students throughout the course. Accommodations and modifications are provided to high school students based on the IEP/504. Students will also be trained for the job-seeking process by means of mock interviews, resume building and industry guest speakers sharing their knowledge.
Once the one-year program is completed, successful candidates are encouraged to seek the required certifications like the ADEQ Water Treatment Operator Level 1 and the ADEQ Wastewater Treatment Operator Level 1. Moreover, West-MEC offers many industry credential tests at no additional cost; students who are asked to pay for a test will be reimbursed. Through the Environmental Sustainability program and Water Treatment certificates, students are provided a pathway to economic independence.
