When you become a student pilot, one of the biggest factor you will consider is the cost for your aircraft rental.
Your training will cost more or less based on the make and model of airplane you choose to fly. And there is of course the rising cost of fuel
One of the main reasons why most new pilots choose to fly in older aircraft is simply because they assume they are cheaper. Or in many cases, those are the only available options at flight schools.
Currently in cities like Atlanta GA, the hourly cost to rent a 50 year old Cessna 172 is $195 per hour. That old Cessna or piper will burn roughly 8-10 gallons of fuel per hour. This is a major part of what goes into the rental fees for students.
Now let’s bring in the modern light sport aircraft like the Sling NGT which we are flying. They are economical because we only burn 3-4 gallons of fuel per hour. In climb and speed performance, they actually matchup great with the older airplanes. Also not anymore is a light sport aircraft like the NGT limited to just training for just a sport pilot license. With the new technology and avionics in this aircraft, one can train all the way to commercial pilot license in a light sport aircraft.
